GO-DAAN -VAITARANI GODAAN
Go-daan is the ceremonial gifting of a cow: - go-daan is the ultimate charity, as all devas and holy places (tirthas) reside in the body of a cow it is to be understood that one is donating the universe itself by giving a cow in charity. Go-dan can be performed on any occasion, whether it is at the fulfillment of a Vrata (vow) or as Prayaschitta (atonement) for accidentally committed offences.
The performance of go-daan is also said to help the subtle body of the departed person to cross over the vaitarani river (citation needed *as mentioned in Garuda Purana) therefore elderly people and family members perform go-daan for their loved ones to assist them on their onward journey.
